FIETSKANT

BASURAL

A project in Rotterdam by studio Schuim in 2012. The reuse of old bycicle parts like frames, pedal cranks and rims were built to a creative fence. The parts were welded together and sprayed with red color and creating a very nice asthetic presence to the street.

ARCH 132S Rotation 4 Final Product: Project Website

Rebecca Lefkowitz

My studio design-build project is finally finished! Check out the project’s blog for a look at our process from start to finish.

The librarians in the Stuckeman Family Building Architecture Library commissioned my section of first-year architecture students to design and build two projects, one in the entrance vestibule of the library and another along the path outside the library that would, together, announce the relatively hidden library, among other things. After the beginning design processes, the section broke off into the two groups that either worked on the interior or exterior project; I worked on the interior project for the majority of the final designs and building.

I was also one of two students put in charge of designing and assembling the working drawing set for the project, which served as a means of construction for the rest of the design project.

Day 113: Something Beautiful—Something Functional

Travels of Bogie

Something Beautiful is a self-imposed initiative to find a visual feast for each day of a year.

I grew up in a lean household. Spare. Creative. Not wasteful. We were saving to buy a farm of our own and money was spent on only what was necessary. As I grew older, I began to understand that what we lacked in money, we had in time. My Mom, a great craftsperson, taught us the merits of excellent skills. We made many beautiful clothes and items for our home from few resources.

Making something from nothing, inspired my spirit of design—especially that which is beautiful and functional. Sleek. Beautifully simple but elegant in that simplicity. Well-conceived, beautifully executed design. Like the “Rising Table” by Netherlands based designer Robert van Embricq. I only have a few special pieces of furniture, but like this piece—those items are beautifully designed to a degree of perfection…

PLAY SCHOOL // 22nd April 2013

RJ TimeouT

loop_021Building a kindergarten is not a simple task. You have to consider many details, such as creating a fun and entertaining environment but also a place where the kids won’t easily hurt themselves while playing. Tokyo and beijing-based practice SAKO architects just opened the ‘LOOP’ in Tianjin, a one of a kind kindergarten that plays with the contrast between the industrious apartment-block surroundings and the colorful colosseum of education. From the footprint to the window sills, not a single sharp corner exists, all edges being beveled for a kid-friendly environment. Eighteen vivid tones span the spectrum of the color wheel and carry through to the structure. By gradual transformations, the colors hold a logistical purpose, as they are used by the children to identify different areas in the structure so they do not get lost in the building.

There are three levels of classrooms and the top two contain a…

A new picture of REK bookcase is ready. It was taken by photographer Peter van Dijk in a former railway shed in the Dutch city of Tilburg. It is a great industrial space creating a wonderful contrast with the abstract and clean form of the bookshelf.
